Managing Returnable Transport Items With RFID
OCT. 4, 2011 - 9 AM TO 11 AM EDT
Download the whitepaper »
This virtual event will feature case studies discussing the use of radio frequency identification in returnable transport items (RTIs), which are used to carry goods within the supply chain or within a manufacturing process. Hear how RFID can be employed with roll cages, pallets, plastic crates and totes to provide increased visibility for manufacturers, distributors, RTI pooling companies and retailers. Learn how the technology can provide exact information regarding where a particular RTI has traveled, who used it last and when that RTI should be returned.

Welcome and Introduction
Speaker: Mark Roberti, Founder and Editor, RFID Journal |

Managing Returnable Transit Items (RTIs) Using RFID
Packaging Logistics Services (PLS), a British provider of plastic pallets and reusable containers, and a manager of pallets and containers used by other companies, is employing RFID to track its own assets-while also helping customers set up an RFID tracking system for their reusable pallets and containers. PLS has tagged its own products, in addition to installing RFID interrogators at its four European depots (three in the United Kingdom, and one in Germany), as well as at 16 third-party warehouses that the firm utilizes to ship its pallets and containers throughout Europe. In this session, hear the company's future plans, which include deploying readers in customers' warehouses, and enabling them to share information with PLS regarding container movements. Speaker: Jon Graves, General Manager, Packaging Logistics Services |

Improving the Visibility and Authentication of Widely Distributed Assets
Learn how an agricultural products wholesaler is employing RFID to track returnable transport items (RTIs) distributed to more than 400 growers. In addition to greatly enhancing the efficiency and speed of both the dispatch and receipt of these assets, the wholesaler is gaining the benefit of reducing theft and the insertion of inferior counterfeit assets into the work stream. Speaker: Sander Merkx, Director and Owner, Mieloo & Alexander Business Integrators |

Selecting the Right Tag for Long-Lived Assets
The selection process for an RFID tag to be permanently attached to an asset with an expected useful lifespan of many years is very different than when selecting one for a single-use shipping carton or apparel tag. This session will discuss, in detail, the design and construction characteristics, quality-control procedures and highly accelerated life testing (HALT) required to insure that a tag's maintenance-free expected lifespan-both mechanically and in terms of stable RF performance-matches the asset's lifespan. Speaker: Paul Clarke, Director of Product Management, Omni-ID |

The Importance of RFID Standards for RTIs
An automotive industry group is set to release requirements and recommendations for implementing RFID technology to track the reusable containers used by that sector. The guidelines for RTIs-such as containers, pallets and other reusable assets used to transport parts and assemblies throughout the automotive supply chain-will address the lack of an international standard to ensure container visibility between supply chain members, which often leads to lost containers and delayed production. Learn how the standards will clarify the procedure for storing data on RFID tags, so that it can be shared among multiple parties in the worldwide automotive supply chain. |

RFID For Yard Management Webinar
SEP. 27, 2011 - 11 AM TO 1 PM EDT
This virtual event will feature case studies discussing the use of radio frequency identification in yard management to facilitate the ability to track the location and status of all vehicles, as well as their associated inventory throughout a yard, in real time. Sessions will cover efficient equipment-yard inventory management, including how to employ RFID to automatically track the amount of inventory on hand, where and to whom it is being delivered, how long it has been outstanding, and how often it is used.
| 11:00 AM | Welcome & Introduction with Mark Roberti, Founder and Editor, RFID Journal |

Using RFID for Deploying Assets in Oil & Gas in Laydown Yards
Learn how one of the world's largest logistics providers for offshore Oil & Gas exploration and production employs EPC RFID to support the management of equipment at its laydown yards and shipyards. In this session, the firm will discuss the value of RFID technology to manage the location and identification of a variety of owned, consigned, and rental equipment. This firm is a leading innovator or exploiting the latest long-read range and highly durable RFID technologies in environments and applications previously unaddressed. Speaker: Hubert Bass, Systems Manager, C-Logistics (Division of Edison Chouest Offshore) |
| 11:30 AM |
RFID for Tracking of Military Vehicles and Material
The leading command for pre-provisioning of cargo ships with military equipment used RFID to achieve accurate manifests and streamlined operations. Before developing a passive RFID system to track which equipment was in its yard, and how the various pieces of equipment were loaded and unloaded, the command often experienced incorrect counts and lost identity of valuable assets. This presentation will include video demonstrating impressive gains in yard management, vehicle identification and labor savings versus previously deployed methods. Speaker: Lyle Layher, MPS Plans Management Branch, Blount Island Command, U.S. Marine Corps |

RFID-Enabled Yard Management
In order to reduce inbound and outbound trailer bottlenecks, and to enhance operating procedures while streamlining operations, a logistics-management firm is uniquely employing passive RFID technologies at its customers at an enterprise-level across multiple distribution centers. This is proving to be a much more cost-effective and long-term reliable solution than Active RFID, GSM, or GPS-based solutions. In this session, hear how a yard-management solution is reducing inbound and outbound trailer bottlenecks, and allowing the company to build effective yard plans, enhance operating procedures and streamline operations. Speaker: Chuck Bealke, Vice President, Retalix |

Achieving Active RFID Performance With Passive RFID Economics
The maturation of highly-durable, long-read range, fit-for-purpose passive RFID tags combined with the advent of long-read range passive RFID systems with RTLS capabilities as well as innovative mobile RFID reader platforms is revolutionizing the ability of organizations to track assets in a variety of yard environments, at much lower initial infrastructure and tag costs, and with the long term advantages of long-lived tags that do not require batteries.
